An entry mechanism company contacted us to develop an innovative platform allowing for online monitoring and control of access barriers such as garage doors and swing gates. The company recognized that the successes enjoyed in the smart-home monitoring sector could be applied to operating garage doors and swing gates, with all operations consolidated in the cloud.
We extended the company’s existing hardware and firmware and developed a cloud-based infrastructure eliminating the need for an on-site, product-specific hub. The online functions we provided included monitoring the current state (open, closed, blocked) and incorporating additional safety features such as noise alerts when the barriers are in operation (both for the virtual user and on-site) and backup battery status. The system also allows users to grant or remove access to a site and to operate the barriers.
Once we had perfected the cloud-based system, we collaborated with the client to develop a web application and iOS and Android applications to assist in monitoring the barriers. We built a self-help website to provide customer support and marketing endeavours. The cloud-based infrastructure was both highly available and highly scalable, validated for hundreds of thousands of concurrent user sessions.
